Improvised performance with rice paper – Direction and Performance by Soyoung Park: 11 May 2018, Gold Saucer (Vancouver, Canada)
I am interested in the sounds that traverse our daily lives and live with us. Their ordinariness and familiarity prevent us from hearing them, and they become silence or noise depending on the acuity of our auditory. Silence and noise are merely sounds devoid of the sounds that we expect to hear. I explore the relationship between silence and noise through a form of sound-art performance. In this performance, I experiment with using movement as a ritual to bring sounds out of their oblivion into our consciousness. I use white rice paper to generate sound and to evoke the idea of death. I improvise my movements to the sounds and movements made by the paper.
